Review | All action on Day 1 of the National Schools Championships

It was all action on the opening day at the 2024 National Schools Lacrosse Championships as teams from all across the UK descended on the Aldershot Garrison to face off in their Day 1 pool play matches.

After weeks of anticipation, 10am saw the opening matches get underway and some of the best young lacrosse players in the country take to the fields to show their skills; and they didn’t disappoint.

Across a full day of full throttle action, a number of teams underlined their credentials by completing Day 1 with a 100% record to take into tomorrow’s Championship.

And none more so than 2023 Challenge Cup winners Guildford High, who scored 37 goals in their five matches against Wycombe Abbey, Monmouth, Loretto, Malvern St James, and Harrogate, while last year’s Nationals and Challenge Cup runners-up Moreton Hall were equally impressive in sitting atop of their group, defeating St Mary’s Calne, Benenden, Bedford, St Barts, and Canford.

Godolphin, St Swithun’s and Westonbirt rounded off the sides with a perfect record heading into Sunday as the Top 16 from today’s play head into the Championship phase of the competition.

Meanwhile, last year’s U19A champions St Catherine’s still made it an undefeated Saturday in topping their group and heading through to the Top 16, despite being held to a 2-2 against group runners-up Downe House.

Queen Anne’s Caversham and St Albans also both recorded undefeated days, as the level of action looks set to be extremely high tomorrow as we look to crown our 2024 winners.

In the U19B competition, Berkhamsted, Putney and Guildford all set the pace winning five out of five to head into tomorrow’s play on a high.

However, as we all well know, everything is to play for on Sunday, and with our Divisional finals in addition to the Championship group, all teams still have plenty to play for.

Day 2 of the Championships begins tomorrow at 9am with the knockouts getting underay from 1pm before our finals later in the afternoon.
