Day 1 Review: Goals galore at the 2023 National Schools Championships
Goals galore on Day 1 at the 2023 National Schools Lacrosse Championships
A remarkable 1424 goals were scored across the opening day’s play as schools from all across the UK descended on Hampshire to face off in their Day 1 pool play matches.
The Championships got underway under glorious blue skies at Aldershot Garrison Sports Centre, and the action on the field did not disappoint either.
In the U19A competition, last year’s champions Putney High threw down the gauntlet to any potential title challengers, ending the day with a 100% record and six wins from six.
It had been a fairly straightforward day with wins over North London Collegiate (8-2), Malvern St James (9-0), Tudor Hall (10-0), Stowe (4-2), and St Paul’s (7-1), before they concluded with a crunch match against fellow unbeaten side Shrewsbury in their final pool match of the day, coming through it as impressive 4-1 victors.
2022 runners-up Berkhamsted also matched their efforts with a 100% record of their own, in addition to School Challenge Cup champions Guildford High, Queen Anne’s Caversham, Godolphin, and Bolton School.
St Catherine’s, Benenden and Moreton Hall also all went unbeaten, putting plenty of names in the running come the business end of the competition tomorrow.
In the U19B competition, it was the story of the saints, with St Catherine’s, St Swithun’s and St Georges Harpenden going through to tomorrow with a 100% winning record.
But as always, everything is to play for on Sunday, and with our Divisional finals in addition to the Championship group, all teams still have much to play for.
Day 2 of the Championships begins tomorrow at 9am with the finals taking place in the afternoon.
